"Herbal medicine's been around for thousands of years!" Indeed it has, and then we tested it all, and the stuff that worked became 'medicine'. And the rest of it is just a nice bowl of soup and some potpourri.

Modern pharmaceutical development often focuses on isolated, chemically‑derived drugs, which can be highly effective but may also come with significant side‑effects.

Herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years, but the reality is more nuanced than Dara suggests!

Many modern drugs originate from plants, such as

  • Digoxin from foxgloves

  • Aspirin from meadowsweet

  • Morphine from poppies

Research into plant constituents continues today, contributing to development of new treatments for conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and autoimmune disease.

Medical herbalists use whole-plant preparations, drawing on naturally occurring combinations of constituents. Herbal medicine utilises the plant's broader chemistry to strengthen, rebalance, and support the body as a whole.

And as for food being “just a bowl of soup”, nutrition is a powerful therapeutic tool. What we eat can influence inflammation, energy, digestion, hormones, and overall resilience — making diet an important part of herbal treatment.
